When I awoke on Sunday 29th November, the rain was pouring down, and the players were probably wondering what they had let themselves in for, but soon after 8am it cleared up and the car park soon swelled with cars as the 16 strong Croydon team arrived to take on the Quarry Park team in the first leg of the Hyzer Cup.
The Hyzer Cup is an annual matchplay event played over 2 legs, and one of the main aims is to involve as many local players as possible. This was the first competitive golf experience for quite a few players, and with so many unknown quantities the results were difficult to predict.
The first round was doubles, with 8 pairings from each team, and Quarry Park got off to an amazing start, taking 6.5 points to Croydon's 1.5. In the afternoon we played 16 singles, and took 10 points to Croydon's 6. Croydon got 2 half point bonuses for longest drive and closest to pin, while QP took a half point bonus for longest putt. QP will thus take a 17 to 8.5 point lead to Croydon in the New Year and will no doubt face a stronger team on their home patch. Go QP!!! Well played everyone!
