Quarry Park Open 2022

The 2023 Quarry Park Open was held on 8-9th July

What an amazing summer we had at Quarry Park. The great weather, and booming worldwide interest in disc golf, resulted in a record numbers of visitors to the course, in some months we had a 100% increase in rounds played!

After 23 consecutive years as UK Tour Champion I have finally relinquished my crown to Dan Ryan, but hopefully I won't be hanging up my disc golf bag for many years yet! In the QP Club, Jon Tweed is starting to snap at the heels of the title contenders and has finished 4th in the last 2 British Tour events. In his first full year of playing, Lloyd Jacques has been improving at an astounding rate, winning the Intermediate Amateur title in his last 2 tournaments.

The 19th Quarry Park Open was contested by a record 73 players from all over the UK, and won by Dan Ryan from London. Dan was the only player to shoot under par in all 4 rounds, and won comfortably from Hamish Blair in 2nd and Quarry Park locals Derek Robins and Jon Tweed in 3rd and 4th spots. The full provisional results are available at the PDGA website. The other divisional winners were Sophie Southgate from Essex (Women), Sam Stevens of the Croydon Club (Advanced Amateur) and Quarry Park's Lloyd Jacques (Intermediate Amateur). It was a fantastic weekend of disc golf and thanks to all th eplayers who took part and also to Neil Webber who was tournament director.
During the summer the short course is generally dry, but on the main course Hole 5 is perpetually wet. The situation is always liable to change depending on the level of rainfall in recent days, so if we do have a rainy spell, walking boots are recommended. The fairways are generally clear of nettles, but you will inevitably stray from fairways on some occasions, and you may well encounter nettles when you do so, for this reason I would advise wearing socks or trousers to at least cover your lower legs.

Quarry Park had the honour of hosting the first BDGA Tour Event of the year on 2-3rd February. Half the course had been under water the previous weekend, and contingency plans were being made in case of continued flooding, but thankfully the river levels went down and left a very soggy, but playable course.

The tournament lived up to its name, with low temperatures and a biting wind, it was indeed a chilly chuck. Fortunately, disc golfers are a hardy bunch and we had a good turnout of 43 players. The first round proved pretty testing for most players,

We have a couple of ways for you to spread the love of disc golf this Christmas. The shop now stocks vouchers for £10 and £20 which can be redeemed against fees or merchandise at Quarry Park, and there's a voucher for 2 rounds. We can even print off customised vouchers for different amounts, but you will need to give some notice, as there's no printer at the course. We also have some greeting cards featuring winter scenes from the course. The opening hours are still 10 until sunset at weekends, although the course may be unattended in very poor weather. Call Derek on 07780 727921 to check.
